Introduction
We are representing an established drilling contractor seeking a practical, field-focused safety professional with land drilling, high-risk work and commissioning experience. The role will be Perth based Monday-Friday until November, before transitioning to a 2:2 roster for mobilisation and VR-330 operations, supporting frontline crews, risk controls and compliance.
About this role
As Safety Officer, you will work closely with Drillers, Offsiders, Supervisors, client representatives and site HSE teams to support the safe commissioning, start-up and operation of a specialist land drilling rig.
You will provide practical day-to-day safety support, coach frontline teams, strengthen permit and risk controls, conduct field inspections and ensure compliance with company standards, client procedures and Western Australian legislative requirements.
This role will suit an experienced safety professional who is comfortable working around drilling equipment, mobile plant and high-risk activities, and who enjoys being visible in the field, building credibility with crews and delivering practical safety outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide hands-on HSE support across land drilling, commissioning and field operations.
- During the first two months in Perth, develop, review and prepare HSE documentation, including procedures, SWMS, JHAs, risk assessments, work packs and supporting mobilisation documentation.
- Support the safe mobilisation, start-up and operation of the VR-330 drill rig and mobile equipment.
- Conduct inspections, audits and field safety interactions.
- Review permits, JHAs, SWMS, Take 5s, work packs and pre-start risk assessments.
- Provide oversight of high-risk work including lifting, confined space, mobile plant and stored energy.
- Investigate incidents and hazards, complete root cause analysis and track corrective actions.
- Deliver inductions, toolbox talks and coaching on hazard identification, critical controls and risk management.
- Maintain HSE records, statistics and statutory compliance documentation.
- Liaise with client HSE teams, site management, supervisors and frontline crews.
- Support emergency response, injury management, wellbeing initiatives and continuous improvement.

Essential Requirements
- Previous experience in a Safety Officer or HSE Advisor role within land drilling, oil and gas, mining or heavy construction.
- Strong understanding of WA WHS and mining safety legislation.
- Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety or equivalent qualification.
- Current C Class Driver's Licence.
- Strong incident investigation and risk management capability.
- Experience supporting permit-to-work systems and high-risk activities.
- Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills.
- Ability to coach and influence drilling crews and frontline leaders.
- Ability to work independently within remote FIFO operations.
Highly Regarded
- Previous experience with an oil and gas or specialist drilling contractor.
- Land rig commissioning, start-up or mobilisation experience.
- Directional drilling or VR-330 rig experience.
- Experience supporting lifting, confined space, mobile plant and stored-energy activities.
- ICAM, TapRooT or similar incident investigation training.
- Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.
- Current First Aid Certificate.
- Mental Health First Aid.
- HR Driver's Licence.
- Return to Work Coordinator experience.
